Tutorial 2 of 5

Arrange solids and save camera shots

Intermediate 7 min

Work with units, grid snapping, exact transforms and reusable camera views.

Arrange the scene

Select a solid from the tree. X and Y position it on the ground plane; Z raises its base. Width and depth scale its footprint while height changes the extrusion. Rotation turns around Z. Figure Lab figures can also carry tilted solids created by the shared figure engine.

The source model uses millimetres with Z up. Display units switches to inches without rescaling geometry. Grid size is displayed in the selected units. Snap positions to grid rounds position edits to that spacing. With the preview or the object list focused, the arrow keys nudge the selection by the grid; Shift uses ten grid steps.

Organize objects

Rename objects and group them with tags. Visibility excludes a solid from the renderer. Lock protects it from edits, duplication and deletion until unlocked. Duplicate places a copy one grid step diagonally from the original and keeps its finish.

Choose Array… on an unlocked selected solid to create several editable copies at once. A linear array steps along the world X, Y and Z axes. A circular array positions copies around a world-space X/Y center; turn on Rotate copies around center to rotate their footprints too. Set the number of additional copies, offsets and angle, then choose Create copies. Copies keep the original finish but are independent objects: changing the original later does not change them. The operation is one undoable edit. Fit the visible model after creating copies, and check for overlapping solids. The 128-solid limit still applies.

Ctrl/Cmd C and V copy and paste a selected solid inside the workspace. Delete removes it while the preview or the object list has focus, and the next solid in the list is selected. Undo and redo track up to forty edits, including materials, camera changes and scene notes.

Save viewpoints

Fit visible model chooses a camera target and span around all visible solids. Change camera azimuth, elevation, target coordinates and span to compose the view. Frame selected solid fits the camera to the selected visible solid, and the quick views (View +X, View −X, View +Y, View −Y, Top view and Isometric view) look along the named world axis while keeping the framing. Save camera shot records a named view; a scene supports eight shots. Choosing a saved shot changes only the camera, and Remove shot deletes it.

Fit image and the zoom buttons control the displayed image size. Drag the viewport to pan, or use Ctrl/Cmd plus the wheel to zoom. These actions do not change the camera.

Reuse geometry

Open Form Studio JSON or a Render Desk recipe directly. Export Form Studio JSON from Geometry and reusable recipes to edit custom footprints in Kerfwise, then reopen the updated model here. OBJ and STL export separate solids in millimetres. Overlapping solids are not fused with boolean unions.
