Tutorial 4 of 5
Add texture studies and figure references
Beginner 8 min
Use Texture Lab and Figure Lab alongside an editable scene.
Study a local texture
Texture Lab is an independent material-map workspace inside Renderloom. Open a local PNG, JPEG or WebP, or choose an original procedural example. Height levels, gamma, blur and inversion interpret image values as height. Normal strength and green-channel direction control the generated tangent-space normal map.
Roughness, occlusion and metalness are deterministic approximations, not recovered physical properties. Preview the generated maps and keep the original source with the settings in a material project. Export the PNG maps for a compatible 3D application.
Check the boundaries
Use edge blending to reduce a visible seam in repeated textures, and inspect the tiled preview. Blending changes edge values and cannot make every photographic subject seamless. The Texture Tile Seam Checker tool quantifies opposing-edge differences for an explicit height grid.
The Renderloom concept renderer uses solid colors with matte, satin or metal finishes. It does not consume exported PBR maps. Texture Lab is useful preparation for other 3D tools, and keeps this limitation explicit.
Stage a figure
Figure Lab creates original stylized parametric figures; it is shared with Panelcraft. Choose proportions and a pose starter, or keep your own poses under My poses, then choose Insert figure to add the figure as editable Form Studio solids to the scene. The camera fits the combined scene after insertion.
Figures provide scale, gesture and composition references. They are not anatomical human meshes, animation rigs, identity scans or MakeHuman assets. Adjust them for your creative purpose and keep a separate figure project when you want to revisit the parameters.
Move between tools
Use the rendering toolbox for small scene previews, sampling budgets, profile extrusion, geometry reports, light comparisons and texture calculations. Each tool also exposes its engine through JSON API and MCP.
Geometry and reusable recipes provides portable files. When another usefulweb app accepts an exported image, model, plan or JSON file, the Open in another app actions hand it over locally through App Bridge.
Pack material map channels
Open Custom channel packing in Texture Lab and choose a source for each red, green, blue and alpha channel. Cavity, roughness, metallic, height, their inverted values, black and white are available. Smoothness is the inverse of roughness; inverted channels store 255 minus the original 8-bit map value. The selected values are copied into the PNG as data bytes; inspect the target renderer’s channel and color-space requirements. Choosing a channel switches the preview to Custom packed map; use Download map PNG to save it. The mapping is saved with the material project and restored by undo and redo. The material ZIP includes packed.png and records its RGBA sources in README.txt. Older projects without a mapping open with cavity, roughness, metallic and white as the default. A nonwhite alpha channel affects how the preview is composited.
